Ronnie Villagracia – Designer

To make a long story short, Ronnie is a person who pursued his passion for being a designer rather than taking the path of software engineering.

Ronnie was born in Davao City. He majored in Software Engineering at the University of the Immaculate Conception and received his bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, but being at the core of global technology was never really his first choice; his plan had been to major in Music. Ronnie is a music enthusiast who plays a number of instruments and values every tone, rhythm, and sound. He dreams of someday taking his guitar to rock the world’s biggest stages and theaters—after all, dreams have no limits.

After graduation, Ronnie took a job as a C# Software Programmer and refined his skills. Soon, however, he discovered that his passion was not in software development and he gravitated towards design. In time, that path brought him to Tapy!

Who is your favorite artist and why?

One of my favorite artists is Ricardo Gimenes, the maker/author and illustrator of “Behind the Website.” I really appreciate how he makes exceptionally creative illustrations. Even though I don’t know how to draw illustrations myself, I appreciate his technique and the way he makes these very creative works of art. He can take a meaningful image or illustration, and make it really fun for the audience.

How did you meet your closest friend?

I met my closest friend through cosplay (costume play). I really like to go to events that feature cosplays, jpop performances, anime, and manga. At one of those events, there was a girl cosplaying a ninja character—I thought her costume/character was amazingly cool. Of all the cosplayers I saw, only she possessed the essence and coolness of a ninja character; how she moved, how she looked, how she stood, and even the way the costume fit her. I really wanted to meet the person behind that mask.

Days later, I found out that the girl was one of my schoolmates. We were in the same department, but I was a year ahead of her. She eventually joined my band, which allowed us to grow closer and hang out together every weekend. We found out we had a lot in common besides cosplaying, and since then we’ve come to be best friends.

If you suddenly inherited a million dollars, what would you do with it?

First, I would buy every single thing that my family and I need; second, I would buy the things that I wanted most and travel to places I haven’t been to; and last, I would build a family business that my family could depend on in the future.

Name one thing you would change about the world.

Greed…the essential thing that I want to change about the world. It is one of the main reasons why a lot of people around the world experience poverty. Greed is the core of corruption: people can’t settle for “enough”, so they strive for more without considering the effects of their actions. A lot of people around the world still suffer from poverty. If every individual would make the exceptional effort to remove the greediness from within himself, then maybe all people would be able to support at least their basic needs in life: food, shelter, and clothing.
